Glaciers are normally formed in v-shaped, river valleys. As the glacier moves down the valley it creates a u-shaped valley, as a result of abrasion, which is steep-sided, wide and relatively flat bottomed. The moving glacier grinds away at the base and sides of the valley over hundreds of years, forming the u-shape.
